Bedford is a borough located in Bedford County, Pennsylvania. As of the 2000 census, the borough had a total population of 3,141. Bedford is notable for having been the headquarters of George Washington and his force of 13,000 while putting down the Whiskey Rebellion in 1794. Bedford County was created on March 9, 1771, from part of Cumberland County. It was named for Fort Bedford, which in turn had been named in 1759 for the Duke of Bedford. Bedford, the county seat, is on the site of Fort Bedford. Bedford is a place where pioneers and Native Americans hunted, traded, worshipped and fought, where today's visitor enjoys unparalleled natural beauty and genuine hospitality.
